What are strategy games you can finish in under an hour?
Quite a few, once you look beyond the huge titles. Midterms 2026, an iPhone election strategy game, finishes in well under an hour. Mini Metro and a single run of Slay the Spire or Into the Breach are also short enough for one sitting.
Why finishable matters
Most strategy games are built to eat weekends. That's great if you have weekends. If you have a lunch break, you want a game with a beginning, a middle and an end, so you get the satisfaction of a result.
I think that's the real test: can you see the whole arc in one sitting? Many strategy games can't.
What fits in a short session
- Mini Metro. A round lasts as long as your subway network holds together, and it's easy to pick up and put down
- Slay the Spire. A single run is a self-contained story, though runs can vary in length
- Into the Breach. Each battle is a compact puzzle
- The Battle of Polytopia. Matches can be short, depending on the settings you choose
- Midterms 2026. A whole election campaign in one sitting
How a Midterms 2026 campaign stays short
I made Midterms 2026 with that in mind. The campaign is 20 turns, each one a week, ending on Election Day. Each turn gives you a handful of actions and some campaign money, so there are a few meaningful decisions per turn, not a hundred.
You can open state offices, upgrade your headquarters, go on TV, hold a rally with an act that fits the crowd, or meet citizens and answer their problems. Decision cards from oil companies, podcasters and interest groups offer money and you pick. Then election night counts 35 Senate races and all 435 House seats.
It's free for iPhone, needs no account, and the game works offline, so you can finish it anywhere.
What I'd do
- Pick a game with a clear end state, such as a win or loss screen
- Check how long reviewers say a full run takes
- Decide up front whether you want one sitting or a long project, because they ask for different games
If you want something to start and finish on one coffee, a short campaign game is a good fit. Then play it again with a different party and see how the result changes.
If you try a few of these, notice which one you actually restart. The game you replay without being asked is the one that fits your schedule and your taste, and that tells you more than any ranking will.
