What are good turn-based strategy games for iPhone?

By Mert Yerekapan, maker of Midterms 2026 · Updated 2026-10-28

Good turn-based strategy on iPhone comes in a few flavors. The Battle of Polytopia is a compact take on Civilization-style games, Plague Inc. is a famous one about spreading a disease, and Midterms 2026 is a free election game where you build a party. Which fits depends on the theme you like.

What makes turn-based work on a phone

Turn-based games let you stop at any moment, think, and put the phone down. There's no reflex test and no pressure from a clock. I think that suits the phone better than real-time strategy, which wants a big screen and quick hands.

Games worth knowing

A political option

I made Midterms 2026, a free turn-based game where the map is the United States and the goal is Congress. You found your own party, then have 20 turns (weeks) before Election Day on November 3. Each turn gives you actions and campaign money.

You can open state offices, go on TV, hold rallies and meet citizens. Decision cards offer money from interest groups, and you choose whether to take it. Computer-controlled Democrats and Republicans take their own turns and run attack ads as you grow. At the end, 35 Senate races and all 435 House seats get counted.

It needs no account, saves on your device and works offline. A campaign takes well under an hour.

What I'd do

My guess is the best turn-based games are the ones where one decision shows its result a few turns later. That delay is what makes them satisfying.

A small practical tip. Many of these games are free to download but sell extras, so read the listing before you start and decide what you're comfortable with. I'd rather you enjoy the game you picked than feel nudged into something you didn't plan on.
